As a kid, I didn’t just love planes, I lived for them. My bedroom ceiling was an airshow of its own, with model jets like the SR-71 Blackbird, P-51 Mustang, F-14, and F-15 proudly hanging in formation. Summers meant airshows. And back in the late ’80s, I wore out the VHS watching Top Gun (at least 30 times, I stopped counting after I could quote it word-for-word). I was Maverick… minus the jet.
At ten years old, I got “creative.” I built homemade wooden wings, strapped them to my go-kart, and launched off a small hill, full Wright Brothers style. It ended exactly how you’d expect: nose dive. My dirt bike helmet saved me from more than just a bruised ego, but hey, I flew for a second, and that was enough to spark a lifelong passion for aviation.
Fast forward a few decades, and while life grounded my dream of becoming a fighter pilot, that aviation spark never left. When Parrot released the first smartphone-controlled drone, it was like being a kid again, but this time, with GPS and a return-to-home button.
