General Pre-Flight Preparations

Verify that you have the required licenses, certifications, or waivers for the mission
Check local airspace restrictions using FAA’s B4UFLY, LAANC, or equivalent
Ensure you have proper authorization for controlled airspace if applicable
Review no-fly zones, temporary flight restrictions, and local regulations
Confirm flight insurance coverage if required

Mission Planning and Risk Assessment

Review the flight plan and objectives for the mission
Assess potential hazards including weather, obstacles, interference, people, and animals
Identify emergency landing zones and alternative flight paths
Notify necessary parties such as clients, team members, or authorities if needed
Ensure you have proper permissions for private property or restricted areas

Drone and Equipment Inspection

Drone Airframe and Components

Inspect the drone for cracks, loose screws, or damaged parts
Check propellers for chips, cracks, or wear and replace if necessary
Ensure all arms, landing gear, and gimbals are securely attached

Battery and Power System

Check battery charge level with at least 80 percent recommended before takeoff
Inspect battery for swelling, leaks, or damage
Ensure batteries are properly inserted and locked in place
Carry spare batteries and ensure they are properly stored and charged

Remote Controller and Signal

Verify controller battery charge level
Ensure proper pairing between drone and controller
Test all buttons, joysticks, and switches for proper function
Check antenna position for optimal signal strength

Camera and Payload

Ensure camera lens is clean and free of smudges or debris
Check gimbal calibration and stabilization
Verify SD card is inserted and has enough storage space
Test payload such as thermal camera, LiDAR, or multispectral sensors for proper operation

Environmental and Weather Checks

Check local weather conditions including wind speed, precipitation, and temperature
Monitor cloud cover and visibility with a minimum of three miles recommended
Measure wind gusts to ensure they are within the drone’s safe operating limits
Check for potential sources of interference such as power lines, radio towers, and buildings

Flight System and Software Setup

Firmware and Software Updates

Ensure drone firmware, controller, and app software are up to date
Verify GPS connectivity and sufficient satellite coverage
Calibrate the compass, IMU, and sensors if needed

Flight Mode and Settings

Confirm correct flight mode such as GPS, ATTI, or Manual
Check geofencing settings and altitude restrictions
Set Return-to-Home point and verify accuracy
Adjust camera settings based on mission requirements

Final Pre-Flight Verifications

Perform a test hover to check stability and responsiveness
Ensure clear communication with the team and visual observer if applicable
Announce takeoff and confirm safe conditions before launching
Maintain situational awareness throughout the flight
Be prepared to take manual control in case of an emergency

Emergency Preparedness

Review emergency procedures including flyaway, lost signal, low battery, and crash response
Identify emergency contacts and response plan for accidents or incidents
Have a first-aid kit and fire extinguisher available if applicable
